CC106 PTO issues?
I recently purchased a Cub Cadet 106 and when I brought it home everything was in working order but the next day I ran into clutch problems. Did some research and after talking with a guy, concluded there was a protective cup spacer installed when one shouldn't have been.
So I spent this last week a few minutes a night after work every night pulling the front clip, undoing the PTO lever and pulling the engine to access the clutch assembly to remove the cup. I reinstalled everything exactly as I pulled it off and it fired right up and no more clutch problems. Well I am not new to working on cars, engines or anything that moves and is mechanical, but this CC is giving me fits. I grew up riding them and playing around on them I just never took them apart and reassembled them. I put the PTO adjustment lever back exactly as it was and I do not believe it is right or I messed something up. The original 10HP Kohler is no longer in this 106 but was replaced with a reman Kohler 12HP. I fought reattaching the mower deck then finally got it back in. I got the belt rerouted and went to fire it up and noticed, with the lever in the "OFF" position(pulled back) that the mower deck was spinning and the blades were going....shut off the mower and looked up front puzzled. That's not right? I thought I knew how the PTO was supposed to work but maybe I am wrong. Can someone explain how it is supposed to be? While in the off position and running I climbed over the hood and watched the PTO and noticed some sparks and the center of the PTO starting to turn red.... shut it off and figured the sparks were from the adjustment arm was hitting on the three triangles/fins on the PTO. I figured I wont be able to mow so I took the deck back off and pulled the belt out and readjusted the lever so the pressure button wouldn't rub and allow the PTO spin freely.. I AM LOST... I suspect that the PTO is probably shot. |

Sounds like the pto lever fiber button is missing to me or slap worn out. Do a search on cub cadet fiber button.

That PTO is now junk. It's been HOT. Take it off and rebuild it.
I'd suggest staying off Brian's site. He's a hack and shouldn't even be allowed to be on the internet. If you have questions, ask them here. |

You should also have the two metal contact surfaces faced on a lathe to make sure they are flat. If you don't have access to equipment or the skills sometimes buying one already done is a better bet if the work is guaranteed

you can buy any parts for that PTO from any Cub Cadet dealer or online.. Ebay etc.. the rebuild kits come with a tool to adjust the preload on the clutch assy.. you do this with the three screws you see sticking out the front.. the adjustment is very sensitive.. hard to get it right and even without the tool.. the rebuild process and adjustment procedure is outlined in the service manual.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
