Default Is there any point in keeping the compression gauge I just bought to use on my K301?

From what I've read, you can't accurately gauge compression anyway due to the ACR. I don't have the means to either spin the engine backwards or do the "leak down' test, and so it would seem the gauge is basically worthless? If I really can't use it I'll return it to the auto parts store. Have not even taken it out of the plastic wrapping yet.

I would return it.

Thanks Tim. Think I'll return the gauge, take along the battery and have that tested and probably get a new one, then also pick up a test light and follow through with the rest of the proper timing procedure that J-Mech sent me the link for. Something has to have gone radically wrong after I put in the electrical components. It was running much better before I did all that.

Do you have the coil hooked up backwards? The negative side should go to the points. Also make sure the condenser has a good ground.

And that the condenser is wired to the neg side of the coil also.

Both the condenser and points wires are connected to negative on the coil. The condenser clamp is connected securely behind the right coil bracket bolt same as the one I replaced. Then there is a black wire coming off coil positive that goes over to the alternator. If all that is not right, then it's been wrong for the past 6 years.

That's not right. Should go to the key switch.

Sorry...the wire disappears into a bundle (part of the dreaded wiring harness you alluded to!) and so I'm sure, as you say, from there it meanders on its merry way to the switch. I just saw it went in the direction of the alternator and didn't pay it any mind after that. This is why I'm a musician and not a mechanic I suppose. I appreciate the electrical diagram but all that's a bit over-my-head. Thanks for clarifying though.

My brother is a musician (and definitely not a mechanic) ..... he's been trying to rewire his motorcycle for about 4 or 5 months now.... After 500 phone calls with questions I cannot answer without being there, I think he is finally going to hire someone to wire it up. FINALLY.

Sorry.... derailed. Back on topic.

LOL....I think I can relate to your brother's situation!! Well...I know I can't wait that long to get the Cub fixed. With the continued rain, I'm sure I'll be mowing several more times before the end of the season, and then I also use it for plowing snow. It's driving me crazy knowing that I need it again soon - like within days after all the rain we had here today - and yet probably won't be able to use it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
