I think You got a great deal !! Welcome, I can't wait to watch this old girl come to life. I think it would be cool to have a before and after photo thread.
I have the 169 loaded up and am heading to Maryland for my swap adventure. I'll take lots of photos of George's place. Post them tonight when I get back.

I assume you are using a known good battery. If not, take it and get it load tested. It may show over 12v, but under load it may be bad. I've had this happen and heard even of new batteries being bad off the shelf. If you buy your L&G batteries somewhere that can test them, have them do so before you leave with a new battery.
Also, if the grounds aren't making really good contact this can result in the slow turn over and stop you describe.

You also might need to clean the guts of you starter. I've heard of a lot of people doing this and it helps a lot. It's actually pretty simple to do. There's not much to one of these old starters.

That's a nice straight looking Cub.
I like to soak every moving part with PB and also clean or replace the vital parts as soon as I get an old tractor.
Changing the plug, points, condenser, motor oil, cleaning the sediment bowl or changing the fuel filter and charging the battery are cheap and often required things to do. Also, add some Marvel Mystery Oil, or Sea Foam to it to help clean things up once you get it running. Don't forget to change the rear end oil before you use it too much to!

Just a thought on the hydro lever, they will not move if the parking brake is on. I tore apart half my tractor before I figured out what I did.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
