Well it sounds like you have an intermittent problem. Like some of the others it's probably a bad ground, loose wire etc.... On my 782, with the pto engaged, I would get intermittent mis in the engine. It ended up being the safety switch under the seat. Sooo, check everything that pertains to allowing current being sent to the plug for starting the engine. My 782 needs the brake pushed in to start it. Does your 1450 have a safety switch for the brake pedal?

Ok I got some time in on the tractor today. I pulled the plug, cleaned it good, put it to ground and have a great spark, blue flame. However it still will not start without touching a hot wire to the + terminal of the coil ? I tested it without the hot wire to the + terminal of the coil. It just has to be the plug is not grounded while in the motor, I guess I could run a ground wire to the outside of the plug for a simple test. Daddy has a spark tester, I will also use this to trouble shoot with as well. I ran it for about an hour today, and it has some quirks to work out, however the motor runs really well, smooth, plenty of power, and it will fly at top speed!!
I'm going to work on the ground wires tomorrow, that's the only thing I can think of that's causing it to not start, being it has plenty of spark with the plug out touched to the ground strap at the frame. Then again it very well could be a bad coil, but all I have heard, and read is a coil is either good or bad, if it will run it's good. |

When you are touching a hot wire to the coil, you are bypassing something. Have you checked the brake pedal safety switch? Bypass that switch. Unhook the two wires to the safety switch and hook them together and see if you get spark.

The brake pedal safety switch disables the starter. Not the ignition. It's not a bad ground. It's a bad connection from the ignition switch to the + side of the coil. That's it !! Those ignition switch terminals get corroded or the switch is bad. Pull the terminals of of the ignition switch off and check them. While your at it. Ohm out that wire from the ignition switch to the coil.
