Dangerous Newbie - 105 Home Today!
My wife, granddaughter and I picked up our first Cub this afternoon. I found it on craigslist. My granddaughter and I will restore it for her 4H project.
The good: It is in pretty good original condition. It is almost complete. It cost me $150.00. The bad: It does not run. It has a red engine. The grille is missing. So far I am really impressed with the tractor. It is truly massive. By weight only, I feel like I got a good deal. I need to know how to push/move the tractor without damaging the hydro. I need a little background on what appears to be a replacement engine. The serial and model numbers follow. The tractor's serial number is also below. What year is it? K 301 ?

Is that BAD? The engine is red in color. It has the yellow starter/generator and the yellow air cleaner cover. Thanks, Tom |

Congrats, on your 105! There should be a lever, on the right side of the frame. I believe you push the lever down, and it disengages the hydro. Now you should be able, to push the tractor. Make sure it's pushed slowly, because if it's towed fast, it could damage the transmission. Someone please correct me, if I'm wrong on which way to push the lever.

Allen, I think you're right, you push down on the lever. I just pulled the rear of of my 125 roller a couple of days ago and noticed it was different than my 127 of which you pull up on the lever.
I linked you to the Ops and Service manuals in your other post on the 105/125. Your Cub was built March 1968 Check out this chart by Paul Bell

Looks like you got a 12 horse from a doner tractor. Nothing wrong with that. You can move your cub slowly if the hydro release doesn't work. sometimes that release plate breaks off. Just don't move it more than a walking pace.

Yes, I forgot to mention that in my case the manual release buttons were rusted up and wouldn't go down just by using the lever. I had to spray with PB Blaster and work them with pliers to get them loose.

Thanks guys. Knew I was in the right place here. I suspose the Cub's hydro is similar to my JD 318's hydro. I just could not figure out where the lever was.
With the engine being painted red, what type/brand would you think the engine was originally mounted upon? Is there a way to track the Kohler by its serial number? Thanks, Tom |
