Re-facing the PTO clutch is a best practice, as recommended, but it's not really necessary unless it is badly pitted.

If you have the service manual, you can rebuild the clutch. It's not hard, just take your time and replace any other parts that are damaged that may not be in the rebuild kit (clutch levers, center button).

I got it tore down as far as I could last night. I would say it's toast. I need to print out a service manual so I don't have to keep looking st my computer and phone. I'm trying to source parts locally as to keep from paying and waiting for shipping. So far no cub dealer has them in stock. I'm not in a rush either to get it rebuilt, mowing season is coming to an end.

It's on the parts list. I got the collar unlocked last night and that's where I stopped. I need to go get my gear puller from my dad and should be able to rip that off tonight. I'm still trying to figure out what caused the whole PTO to bind up and burn out.

Could have something to do with the tractor being almost 50 years old

The clutch must have been slipping and causing heat.. looks like it got really hot! Unless you find a really old Cub Cadet dealer they aren't likely to have the parts in stock. Any of the sponsors at the top of the page will have the parts you need.. shipping won't be that bad.. none of it is bulky or heavy..

I've found a few here in KC but they only have the clutch kit. One could get them just would take 3-5 days and for my list it was around $150, clutch kit/bearing and collar/throw out levers/ and what other small things not included in the kit. I don't mind paying for shipping and waiting just figured if I could avoid it I would.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
