Default 149 charging problem

OK, first of all, I want to put out there that I am not an expert or a mechanic, but I am fairly handy and willing to learn. I've read lots of information here but am still confused as to why I have a problem. Let me list, step by step, what I've done:
1. My 149 battery died, so I replaced it.
2. Over time, realized that the charging system wasn't doing its job.
3. Did the check, as per Roland's excellent directions, and determined the regulator to be faulty.
4. Got a new regulator from O'Reilly's, the R220, which matches up with the VR896 from NAPA.
5. Noticed the terminals on the new regulator are not exactly same as the original. The new one has 4 terminals,(in order from top to bottom) L, BAT, F, and an unmarked terminal on the back. The old one had BAT, GEN, F, and a ground on the side.
6. I "assumed" the terminal on the back was the ground. The BAT terminal is self-explanatory, as is the F. So that leaves the "L" terminal, which again I assumed was the GEN.
7. When I hooked it up this way and tried to re-connect the battery, there were sparks and the tractor started to turn over slowly. OK, I was NOT expecting that!
8. After reading all the material here, thinking from time to time I have it figured out, then I read more and become confused.
9. I removed the new regulator and put the old one back on until I get this figured out.

I sure appreciate any help,

Mooner

VR896...

F = Field Connection = YEL wire
G = Generator Connection = BLU Wire
B = Battery Connection = GRY
L = Load Connection = Not used, insulate and disregard

This regulator "MUST" be grounded. It is done by means of the Mounting Feet. If you have a VOM or DVM, there should zero ohms resistance between the V/R mounting feet and the Battery negative terminal.

Roland,
OK, this helps. So, if the "L" terminal isn't going to be used, does that mean the GEN terminal is actually located on the back of the new regulator? It's not marked.
Thanks!

That is correct.

Thanks, much, Roland. I'll give it another shot and report back to you. So, you're not surprised the engine started to turn over? I sure was.

OK, mission accomplished. Thanks, Roland. I must say, it was a pain having the GEN terminal on the back of the VR. Made it more difficult to attach the unit, but managed. Zero ohms reading from VR attach to neg side of battery. Nice to see the tractor charging again!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
