Anyways,
Local machine shop closed and I was lucky enough to locate a private machinist who was able to help me out on this deal.

Engine was bored to .020 over, polished crank, valve job completed (needed a new exhaust valve), head planed, and the crank polished.

I sourced all NOS Kohler parts for the rebuild. All in all I have about $300 in parts and $100 in all machine work.

Nice to see you going on this one again!

Glad to know i'm not the only one that gets sidelined on projects!!

Keep us posted!!

Default Back Again

Hello everyone,

I had a Tuesday off recently so I took some time to start reassembly on the K161.

I started with getting everything with the valves sorted out, being these are non adjustable valves it takes a bit to get them set properly. After that I started working on reassembling the governor and inserting the cam and getting all of that shimmed up properly. Moving on to the crank I elected to use the 2 NOS crank bearings I had just for good measure seeing that I was using all new parts everywhere else I figured I shouldn't skimp with one detail.

This is where I stop, I realized I have the "large bore" ring set rather than the original "small bore" set that I should have. Now its just waiting on ePay.

I am fortunate enough to have quite a few original service manuals for these tractors and happen to have one specifically for the Original Cub Cadet motor. I have been referencing it quite frequently for specs as I embark on this long awaited project.

Default Finally Done

Just realized I never updated this...

Well after some tinkering and fine tuning I got the motor to purr just like it should with no leaks anywhere, even the head gasket.

So on we went to disassembly and body work. Welded the hood brace and seat and fixed the nose where the hood ornament mounts. I even managed to straighten the grille screen, which was a tedious task.

Then there was a lot of priming and samding before I laid a couple coats of CaseIH Iron Guard for the finished look you see now. It has been a very long but very rewarding journey!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
