Default 125 motor in a 86?

I have to get the 8hp motor in my 86 rebuilt. I have a guy with a 12hp out of a 125 for sale locally. Will the 12hp out of the narrow frame fit in my wide frame? Is it a direct swap? I just want to use the tractor till mine gets rebuilt then putting the original motor back in.

Thanks for any help
John

The 125 engine will fit with some modification. First, the coil will need to be relocated a little higher location to accommodate the the 86 frame. Secondly, you will need to remove the drive hub from the 125 flywheel and install the thee pin driver from your 86 engine for the clutch. Finally, you must remove one of the fuel tanks. The 125 engine has the fuel tank mounted to the engine, whereas the 86 is mounted to the tower assembly. If you are just using the 125 engine temporarily, I would remove the 86 tank for the time being. Personally, I would just rebuild the 8hp engine and be done with it. If you want more hp then look for the correct 10,12,14 or even 16 engine for that series of tractor.

The 86 is a rare model tractor and nobody here will recommend butchering it by putting in a 12hp. If it's just temporary until you get the engine rebuilt that's one thing but if it's going to be permanent then I recommend selling the 86 to someone who will keep it original and buying a higher hp model.

I'm with you guy's. Just going to have the 8hp rebuilt and going back in.
I know the 86 is a little more rare but what makes it the most rare is it was my grandfather's tractor, then my dad's now mine and my sons next. It was bought new.

Sometimes you get horsepower fever. But the 8hp is what makes it special.

Thanks
John

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
