Axle Swap
I recently started working on a transaxle to build a pulling tractor. It's an internal brake from a 1x4 series. I haven't really done much to it yet, just pulled the shifter to repair it. I just got a transaxle from a 680, which should have the two piece fine spline carrier and axles, but it has external brakes. I want to build a cast iron rear with the fine spline carrier and axles from the 680.
My problem is, the cast iron transaxle I have has internal brakes, and I want the 680 transaxle to still be fully functional when I'm done. The axles in the 680 have the studs which I assume are pressed in which holds the brake disk, the axles on the other rear are threaded. Since I can't just swap over the studs and brake disks, would I be able to swap over just the disks and weld them to the axle like the earlier external brake setups? Are the axles the same length? Another option I have is to forget the 1x4 transaxle and try to get a 1x8 transaxle with external brakes from a friend of mine, that should be a direct swap right? Also, in order to do this swap, do I have to/should I also swap the axle housings? Since I'm going to do all of this work I'd rather do it right the first time, but I'd also like the fewest amount of headaches. Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate any advice you can give me.
