Default Any hope for my deck?

I have a 127 with a 48 inch deck that has been just fine till today. When I put the pto in gear, I could hear a grinding noise. After some looking, I narrowed it down to a spindle. The spindle is still tight and it doesn't wiggle like the bearings are bad when I grabbed the blade from below. However, the pulley is loose on the shaft. I tried to shim it up with some washers but the key stock keeps it from engaging the pulley. After taking the belt off, the pulley wobbles about 1/8 side to side. So my question is, do I need to replace the pulley or is it an easy fix that I'm not seeing? Any help is much appreciated.

I took it off to get a better picture of how loose it is on the shaft.

Well... the way I see it, you have two choices.

1.) Replace the pulley and the spindle
2.) Put the nut back on and tighten the crap out of it.

From what I see you can't hurt it any worse! Got a pair of calipers? If so measure the shaft and the pulley so you know for real how bad it is. Maybe consider a new key. If the shaft and the pulley are both worn just a little, maybe you could make a shim from a soda can and wrap as much of the shaft as you can--obviously you can't wrap it all the way due to the key. It's not a repair, but a band aid if you need to get running quickly and cheaply.

Those are some good ideas that I myself would consider using, I would also consider drilling and tap 2 holes into the neck of the pulley and use set screws.
One set screw to push and hold the key way, the other 1/4 dia. away.

The pulley's are pretty inexpensive just bought 2 for my deck but don't recall the price.
The spindle can be pricey unless you can find a good used one, I found one on E-bay a while back that was reasonable, because the used deck I have was missing one.

Keep us posted.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
