Default Bad ground

Sounds like a bad ground at the V/R. May I suggest checking the braid cable on the back side of the regulator? It fixes ground across the vibration isolator and has a bad habit of getting loose or corroded. Also, check the ammeter, if the glass is cracked and it's been sitting outside it'll be toast.

I had similar problems with one of the 147s when I was working out the issues with it: Wound up cleaning and putting in new brushes and bearing in the S/G.
Installed a whole new wiring harness - the original was all rotted out.
Gave the V/R a good working over and found the bad ground strap.
Still had intermittent problems that turned out to be in the ammeter - replaced with a genuine IH part made in America (purchased from Steiner).
At that point everything started working well and all that was needed was to adjust the V/R. Still works good.

I've had lots of problems with new ones; they work briefly then quit. I'd much rather clean and troubleshoot an old one than mess with the four pole ones that are about all you can get new now-a-days. That's just me; I'm sure Jonathon will blast me for that opinion. Asbestos suit on and ready!

Default Taking my time to find the fault

I want you all to know how much I value these comments. After careful review of everything that I have done to get this 147 up and running again, I tend to agree that the fault may lie with the field coil. Since the tractor ran, with the old crispy factory wiring harness, and the charging indicator pegged(changed direction) left and right, I assumed after I replaced the harness and went through the starter/generator that the condition would have been corrected but I was wrong. I made a jumper from the GRN terminal to the VR’s attachment to the frame but it made no difference so I’m prepared to remove it again and follow the instructions in the manual prior to ordering a new one. I will check all of my connections again and follow up as soon as I can to let everyone know if adjustment brings the VR back to normal operation.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
