Great job Stan. I wasn't any help but I was along for the ride while you were wrenching on it.

I gotta ask, what brand was that coil?

I would also like to know about using a o-scope on the ignition. Can one of you explain? I just might need one of those for work.

I/ve been following, glad it got figured out. Had a similar problem on a boat motor. !965 6hp Johnson drove me nuts, trolled with that motor for years. One cyl would run then not run. It was more of a burnt wire on the coil pin. Mike

The coil was a Stens brand and I have two others that are running fine. In all fairness, given the way these coils are made, I think this glue issue could happen with any manufacturer. Just remember one thing, in today's world, new doesn't mean good!

Got a 1958 Evenrude 7-1/2, did the same thing, drove me nuts, finally I got 2 new coils and it has not run so good in 30 years.
Makes fishing fun again.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
