Is it really critical David? As long the camshaft end play is set between 0.005/0.010 I see no problem at all. A +/-0.0004 difference for a shim is nothing to worry about, most mechanic only use 0.001 graduate micrometer not Lab certified and tested 0.0001 graduate like the one I use.

Last update: Rebuilt kit delivery expected 6 September

Not at all Gilles. As a reference, the .01" precision shims that McMaster-Carr sells are listed with a manufacturing tolerance of +/- .001" so your .0004" is well within that range. I just found it curious... I would normally assume that due to wear the shim would be a bit undersized, but you know what happens then?...

Well I can't resist a occasion of picking my ultimate precision tool out of my tool chest and check again that shim...

My Canadian tire home brand "Mastercraft" $30 Caliper!

I'll be damned! 0.0105! But something strange happen! The Good and tasty Chocolate/Caramel cake
the caliper was sitting on disappear just after the picture!

A little heat and few "dong" to remove the "Ding" in the fender/pan

I did more on the fender pan but I keep that story for latter, time to close the shop and answer George nipple story in another thread...

On my way to cross the frontier and pick up parts I order for my engine, I'm done, my bucket list is empty, here what I spend yet:

-"The man one stop shop" Kohler K321 Master kit :$115
-"P&P engine" (Many parts) :$205,50
-"J David Kirk" counterweight and Transdencer II $71

Add to this the machine shop fee, new head bolt, gasket sealer, Valve "Rubbing" compound, assembly oil, break in oil...Bla bla bla. (Not counting the extra tools I purchase because I'm tool addicted..) I didn't cut corner..

About time I post pictures of my rebuild progress, the engine has been sitting like this on the bench for 2 weeks...

You can see the crank shaft counter weight, the oil I use and a picture of the partially assembled engine , only missing is a picture of the Cam and crank shaft TDC alignment, it's in my inspection camera (Borescope). I include a picture of a Harley Davidson piston who show how I install rings on piston on every engine I work on.

We run the same break-in oil in all the engines we build, it's good stuff.

Most guy at Napierville race track use this stuff, I though if it's good enough for a 2000hp 10 seconds run dragster engine on the dyno,
it most be good enough for a 14hp Kohler flat head.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
