nother question.... gonna need this anyways whether it solves the oil consumption issue, or as part of a total overhaul... so I got a new breather element for the engine. but it don't come with what Kohler is calling the Umbrella seal valve" in the breather.... will definitely be as bad or worse on oil consumption without that... shows as discontinued from Kohler. PN 52 462 01. Any idea where I can find this? It reminds me of the check valve behind the accelerator pump on an old Ford 2bbl carb.
in the parts breakdown it is key #8. |

yeah it has a reed in it but (ok let me grab it from the counter, hang on)
the reed has 1 hole in it (not counting the rivet that holds it together) and the base has 2.... the one hole (obviously) is to go over the mounting stud, of course.... Bear with me as I have not been inside of as many Kohler twins as I have K series singles, and it has been a while since I did the one on my KT, so I'm having a brain fart.... I remember the original one from the KT being different from the replacement, but didn't remember "how" it was different.... that must have been it. I was thinking for some stupid unknown reason, that it had the reed, and it had that rubber check valve TOO..... not one or the other. I do remember that the one I used on the KT was the same PN as what they called for on the Magnums and that the original PN for that engine had been superseded.... I haven't taken the original apart yet on this Magnum.... was waiting on the parts to arrive, have too many projects apart all at once besides that one. |

Yeah I have made that mistake before on another engine many years ago.
Being as how this engine is being fixed up as a backup, I have a couple of other ones that I need to do 1st...so i'll swap out the breather, run it awhile and see what it does, and go from there. In the meantime I have a K321 in pieces that needs to see the machine shop 1st. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
