The parts diagram says it should be a 3/8" belt. If I got the correct deck selected anyway. The pulleys don't match though... look how far out of the pulley it sits on the right compared to the left.

Edit: Okay, I was wrong on the deck. Should be 1/2". But there's something weird about the right side pulley and the way the belt sits in it.

You are correct on the one pulley. It's not right. We are talking about the left one as sitting on the tractor, right?
Edit: Neither seem to be seated all that good.

All,
The belt is a 1/2 x 82 inch.... exactly what is recommended. That is what is throwing me. I actually got it to work for about 5 minutes with an 80 inch belt... but it was rubbing all over the place.

Terry and Sir Lance,
I am wondering if my dad bought a pulley that is too narrow or something. Notice the Drivers side pulley is silver/white, the one with the belt looking funny on it, and the passenger side, spring tensioned pulley is yellow.

Sir Lance, how wide are the grooves on the pulley that you sent the link to? I am really wondering which is the bigger problem... the fake extension spring that I am using or the pulley that my dad put on.

John

I also see a little bit of welding on the arm with a pipe in there for support.

According to the manufacturer's website, the total width is 5/8". I can always double check when I get home tonight.

For clarification, to me, it looks like the yellow pulley is too narrow. But MAYBE I'm looking at it wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. But I agree with Terry, they both look a little off. I know my machines are all narrow frame, but the pulleys are the same part number.

The non spring pulley looks too straight also. It should angle toward the deck pulley.
Someone more expierenced will probably figure this right out.

Terry, Lance and all,
I am on the laptop again, so I will post some more pictures for clarification. First off, yes... my dad did some welding and rebuilding several years ago, but I don't know why or anything else. I do know that when I was running it as a teenager that it worked great, pre-rebuild, and that is why I snagged it when I had the chance.
Based off of earlier responses to this post, the two pulleys both swing back and forth like they are meant to when the mule drive is out of the tractor. With everything in place, the passenger side pulley is a spring tensioner, but you take all the slack and put initial tension on the system using that bolt that you see sticking out in front of the drivers side pulley, tightening the nut pulls the pulley forward tightening the belt. Per the manual, when properly tightened, the pulleys should be about even and the spring on the passenger side should have 1/16 of an inch between the coils and the spring should be 3 1/2 inches long from center of pulley to the inner face of the mule drive....
This is what is making me think that I am still too long on the spring.... I don't think that I have the space in the coils, so the spring stretches too much due to lack of strain, and allows the belt to jump.

Here are those pics...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
