Cranks but won't start
A friend of mine was using his 109 with a replacement 12 hp motor in it when it shut off and won't start. It cranks but won't fire up. Any input on the first place to start would be great. The motor has ran great for years with no issues. Electrical problems are not my strong point. I am more of a parts changer in that area than a trouble shooter. Thanks in advance.

Check to see if it has spark. Check those out first and we can go from there. Does it try to start, or just turn over without a puck?

Depending on what it sounds like while turning over, the first thing I do is hook the clip on my test light to the neg battery post, turn the key on and touch the point to the pos post on the coil.
If it lights then I go to the neg post on the coil turn the engine by hand (with the key on) the test light should go on and off, on when the points are open and off when the points are closed. If there is no power to the pos side of the coil then you have to work backward to the battery checking each connection on the way. If there is power to the pos side and none at the neg side, the points are stuck, grounded or not opening, if there is power to the neg side and the light doesn't go out when you turn the engine over, the points are not making contact (these things are only true if there are no broken wires). Quick check for no fuel to the carb... Spray a little ether in the carb and see if it starts. Please remember that 98% of all carburetor problems are electrical.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
