Default 2284 will not go in gear.

I replaced the bearings and bushings in the front axle, new seat and a few other minor things. Will not shift into forward or reverse. I drove it with the seat off yesterday just to move it. The seat pedestal was still on. Any help is appreciated. A safety switch on the seat that I have messed up maybe.

First of all, the 2284 has a Hydro-static Transmission. There are NO gears.

IF...you are referring to the Hydro Control Lever, what does it do...??

I knew it was a hydrostatic trans, just the wrong description of the problem. The lever will not move. if I turn the key off and move the lever as the engine is winding down it will move slightly.

This cub has a separate start switch from the ignition switch so if it is one of the seat switches that I fouled up that is why I can still start it but not get it in gear.

Ok, I will go out and check. I was pushing the brake pedal in when I put it in forward or reverse. I will never make the mistake of saying in gear again. When I let the left pedal up the motor quits.

you have to be sitting on the seat with the brake pedal up or it will die, and with the pedal down it locks the trans in neutral.

Ok, I just bolted the seat to the base today. When I let the left pedal up the motor quits so I need to check the seat switches since it didn't do that before I bolted the new seat on.

If the brake pedal is depressed, it forces the transmission into neutral. You can't move the Hydro lever in either Forward or Reverse. It would be counter productive to brake and move the tractor, at the same time.

There are two Seat Switches, one with a black body and one with a gray body.

The YEL & ORG wires go to the Gray Switch.

The PUR & BLK wires go the the Black Switch.

It doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
