Default Old school

I'm pretty much old school (plus I'm old), and I have one Cub Cadet. My 1250. I have read a lot about the older International Harvester Cubs, mostly on here and have much respect for them. I look on Craigslist often just to see what's available in my area, N.E. Ohio. But I look for mostly the IH Cubs. I was wondering which post 1981 Cubs you find most desirable if one came up for sale at an affordable price? Obviously the condition of the tractor plays in, but being old school, I wouldn't want one less desirable that was stamped, or cheapened like newer tractors have gotten. Any thoughts?

I go camping every year the 1st full weekend in August out your way, about 10 miles west of Norwalk and same distance south of Sandusky, have a group of friends that I camp with out there, and there's a guy with a yard full of older Cubs in that town, been wanting to stop by and see just what all he has, he had a few 1x8/1x9s among other things, along with a full hard cab or 2 just laying out in the open in his yard. Might be worth a road trip, you're closer than me. My wife would kill me if i bring anymore home, besides that would mean taking 2 trucks on the next campout, one for my popup and one for my utility trailer. Oh and extra money too which never seems to be enough of

Anything in the 72 series, 82 series, 1210, 1211, 1810, 1811, 1812 and if you don't mind the plastic hood any of the cyclops tractors. After IH sold Cub to mtd they still made the same tractors in the same plant with the same workers, there's no difference in quality between a 782 built by IH and one built by mtd and the 1811 is considered by many to be the best GT ever produced by Cub and it was mtd made.

I would go for the 982. During that time it was still made by IH and has a lot of tractor there for your work. My only complaint on the 982 is that its "extras" (3 point, snow/dirt blade, etc.) are more expensive than the IH garden tractors. However, before you go exploring on a new purchase I would take inventory of what you really want in a tractor......ie. do you like hydrostatic or gear drive, hydraulic lift or no hydraulic lift, etc.

He was asking about post 1981 Cub's, none of which were made by IH as far as I'm aware.

Yep.

Bullwinkle, any all the CC garden tractor made until 1991 (?) Or so we're all good machines. The exceptions would be the few gear drive models that had the belt driven Peerless trans. Those would be the 482, 582 Special, 580 and the 1604. Remember the 582 and the 582 Special are different tractors. I would also shy away from the 2284 SGT because of the Kawasaki motor. It had issues. Otherwise, all the rest are good. Oh, the earlier 17hp machines used the KT I or KT II engines. Those motors are all getting tired, so if you buy one not running, plan to do an engine swap. Especially if it is a KT17 I. The later tractors with the Mag engines are getting almost as hard to find with good running motors. Just pay accordingly.

Pretty much agree with what the others have said. I'll go one further and say that some of the smaller and light duty machines were of good quality--there just aren't that many survivors of those. The 382 was a heck of a little lawn mower. Even the 582 Special was pretty nice. I liked the 1315 and 20 as well but wasn't around them enough as the years went on to know how well they held up. I think all of those units were built way better than the comparable Murray and Craftsman models of that time--but they were not of the same standard as the "big boy" Cadets.

I'll add if you are just collecting for show, the small ones may be fun. But if you need to get work done and buy parts then I'd sink my money into the full size models.

FWIW, 982 is a beast, and is way overpriced because its the biggest lawn mower IH ever made and collectors want it. No knocking it, I just ran mine last week.

This is great information. Thanks!
I would like to keep the 1250 to do the mowing and add a work tractor to push snow and light dozer stuff. I don't like having to switch back and forth as I have to do right now. I even rigged up a red neck dozer blade lift with a HF winch. There have been many times that I wished I had a three point with this attachment or that attachment. Nothing major, I've lived without it this long but the kid in me is still dreaming I guess. And money is a factor, but I've seen some good deals and needed to educate myself for the one that I might not want to pass up.

Owning a Cub puts you on a slippery slope. Clearly you need more than one. Fortunately there's a lot of 'em out there for you to choose from for your other utility jobs.

Sure, I'm sure they are great in their own way, but if it ain't built by IH, I'll pass it on to the next person.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
