IH 982 power steering
I picked up an IH 982 this summer in real nice shape. Can I put a power steering set up on it? I am thinking about putting a 450 snowblower on it but it would be hard steering with all that weight on the front.
Thanks, Earl

Sure you can if you are a little mechanically inclined.
I have 2 782's ( Red en's) and a 1650 with PS. love the power steering. |

If you can find all the parts from an 1872 or 2072 then it would be a bolt on deal.

You'll need the front axle also.

He can use the manual center section if he cuts the long arm off or get a new center link

The steering on the 982 doesn't have an arm on the left spindle to attach the steering cylinder to. (I'm sure you know that. My statement was directed at all readers.) I do wonder if you can just change the spindle, but use the axle. I think the center steering is far superior. It's the same design as larger IH tractors use. |

I THINK 982 and 2072 have same setup for steering. I had to bore/bush the center pc on my 982 (manual, no upgrade) and then I noticed the 2072 is worn just as bad.

No, the steering on the 982 and the next series is different.... but similar. I think that the pics Oak posted show that well.
What I was saying is that I would just get the whole axle, but I suppose you could just get the parts you need. The other point I was making was that I think attaching the hydraulic cylinder to the original steering point on the 982 would be superior, instead of where it attaches on the later tractor. One of the issues of the later power steering set-ups is that you can bend the arm on the top of the spindle, and the splines can wear out. Probably not really a big deal for a GT, but if I ever get around to my 982, I'm going to try to attach the cylinder to the original steering point. Doing so requires fabrication. Using all the parts off another tractor would be a "bolt on and go" deal. |

Yes you need the left front spindle and the cyl mount .It is longer and has a spline on top.I was thinking of the center section with the arm for manual steering you could cut that part off.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
