I have all heat shields and foam. Muffler and heat shields from a 1862.
I swapped my engine a couple of years ago and have no heat issues, I run the side shields all the time. My kid uses it in his lawn mowing business. She's got a lot of hrs.

I probably found the root of the issue. I remember seeing a mechanic check for exhaust leaks with a rag over the exhaust pipe. I did that with this tractor and it's blowing air out between the support piece and the muffler. There's a crack there.

If you don't have the space between the firewall and the blower intake sealed it will re-circulate hot air. This is what I did when I re-powered a 1210 with a 16HP Vanguard.

I decided to go ahead and drop my good vanguard in this tractor and salt away the CH18 (my original plan for this engine anyway) for my 1864 someday. The Kohler just seems to make it hard to steer, i noticed that when I tried the CH18 in a 1641. The space between the firewall and engine is such that I have room to make a solid shroud just like yours rather than using a thick piece of foam.

I think I would put some foam in and drop the lower shield out and try it for a little bit. might just cure the problem. needs to be able to suck air from the bottom since theres no grates in the side panels like the cyclops have.

It might but I'm already a few steps ahead of that, because I found a crack in the muffler blowing hot air back over the engine. I don't feel like replacing that muffler right now. I am going to drop that shield out and use it for a pattern to make one out of perforated sheet metal to put in there along with a cowl like Sam showed.

You went through all that work, and now you're going to swap motors short of just adding some foam strips? You must like work.
Hey.... the other motor is going to need some kind of seal or shroud and the lower panel removed also. Seems to me it would be a lot easier to just fix the motor already installed in the tractor. |

Seriously though, I had more than one issue with that motor. Mainly it needed another muffler and I melted the air filter cover, and partially melted the valve cover on the one side. It was hot enough that I pushed on it and made an imprint. The air filter cover was a PIA to get on with the firewall there anyway. The Briggs fits much nicer so I will work with that now. It's not a big deal to switch engines. Just a few wires here and there and a few bolts. What's the big deal?

Different drive shaft length also. Hot setup is to use a 1641 or 1440 shaft with the Vanguard.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
