Default QA-42 snowthrower issues

We have our first CC. It is a 125 with hydraulic pump and it has a QA-42 mounted.

Unfortunately, the snowthrower will not sit remotely close to flat on the ground. When down, the right side (looking forward) is elevated about 3". It appears that the thrower pulls the tractor to the left, visible by the relationship of the difference in the space between the frame and the front chassis from the left side to the right side.

The only adjustment in the thrower mount appears to be vertical . . .

I quickly searched through the archives last week for any mention of this problem and didn't find any similar threads, though I did learn about the different models - i.e QA-42, or QA-42A !!! - which is worrying.

Anyways, I thought I'd put it out to the pros and see if there are any rays of hope with this unit, maybe something I've missed.

Welcome and congrats on an awesome tractor! That’s a great little combo there.

Did the blower come with the tractor? Does it sit flat with the lift rod detached?

Do you have any photos of the two, particularly where it attaches to the hydraulic lift?

The blowers do tend to lift a little cockeyed but should sit flat when all the way down.

Oh just thought of something obvious. Did you adjust the stop on the lift so that it allows the cylinder to go all the way down? If it had a deck on it before, that might still be set to keep the blower from going all the way down.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Gompers, yes the blower came with the tractor (unmounted). And I have not checked yet if it will sit flat with the lifting rod detached, and I don't recall from when we mounted it a couple months ago. There is tension on the rod so I imagine it will fall somewhat.

- And, I have a feeling that the lifting rod may have been made recently. The plate at the hydraulic end did not look factory produced / original, it's not very worn, leading me now to wonder if it is the correct length... The old fella we bought it from had picked up the pump on ebay in 2005 from someone who had it on a 123, the ad says and,

"Cub Cadet NF Hydraulic Lift, Rockshaft, Belt, and all mounting brackets, nuts, and bolts". No Lift rod mentioned.

And, no, I did not "adjust the stop on the lift". I am not sure I know what the stop is ! We only took off the deck carriage and attached the lift rod plate to the end of the hydraulic ram.

I will examine it again but I believe that the ram was pulling into the cylinder completely.

Hey, I don't want to state the stupid obvious here, but check the pressure in the rear tires. Make them the same. Also, both rears do match don't they? An inch lower at the left rear will magnify like a teeter totter to the blower on front and may equate to 2" or more of offset. The other 1" may just be the standard "twist" you get with a lift rod on the right side.

I also have a 125 with a QA42 and I love it. Below is a picture of a spacer I made to get enough "down" to get my QA42 to touch my driveway.

The red arrow is the adjustment flat bar that controls how far it goes down. The yellow arrow shows where the bolt to adjust the plate is located. It's a 3/4" nut ( 19mm will work too ) and just slide it towards the front wheels to make the thrower go lower.

The QA42 works best at WOT ( wide open throttle ) and keeping the thrower loaded with snow. Adjust forward speed to get best throwing distance.

The lift rod would have been part of the snowblower package. There should also have been a bracket that attaches it to the hydraulic cylinder and rockshaft.

i'm not super familiar with it, but I think there's some "float" built into the cylinder/attachment that would allow it to retract all the way in (or mostly all the way in), while the rock shaft is against the stop that Jeff very helpfully highlighted, which will keep it from going further down.

As for lift rods, there are two different sizes that I'm aware of, one for narrow frame cubs (1x6/1x7 series and earlier) and one for wide frame cubs. The wide frame one is a little bit shorter than the narrow frame one IIRC. So if you have the wide frame lift rod on a narrow frame, it probably won't go all the way down.

I don't think there was any weird package for attaching the blower to hydraulic lift cubs, but the manual does mention a hydraulic bracket which I think is the same as the standard bracket just trimmed down a bit. There isn't a separate one called for in the parts manual anywhere that I can see.

You are correct. Page 7 of the hydraulic add on manual shows where to cut the standard lift bracket to make it work. Link below.
