Finally got back to the shop this afternoon. Degreasing. Sanding. Grinding. Hoping to paint the frame, front axel, battery support, and some other odds and ends tomorrow.

Todd, I never thought of the predicament you speak of. Wife threatens to shoot me now. I am sure wheel tracks would be more than she could bear.

Got it back on 4 paws. Put the power steering frame plate back on also. Down time with the kids now. Patience was never my best virtue.

You are just having way too much fun.

Now go home and keep the better 1/2 happy or you won't be getting any honey on the biscuit.

I had serious reservations about this machine. The steering was stiff. Way too tight. I was worried the power steering was damaged in some way. I followed Sam's advice and took the CV joint in the steering apart to clean out the old cement-like grease. With the CV joint apart I still had to use two hands firmly to turn the steering wheel shaft. I have long believed this machine has sat outside for a while and the way it was rusted into the plastic adjusting block thing just confirms it. I had a hell of a time getting the shaft out of that block. Once I got it out I took it to the bench grinder to scrub off the rust. Can turn the wheel with one finger now. This kind of feels like a fight to the end at this point.

Got the CV joint for the steering cleaned up, fresh grease and back together. I bought 10 new 5/8 chrome ball bearings from VBX bearings. All the CV joint ball bearings are getting replaced. Some of them are in tough shape. While I had it out I pulled the shifting lever out and put a new friction disk/washer in. Was able to get the power steering cylinder back in place also. With any luck the engine is going back in tomorrow.

Todd, I took the cylinder off. It was puking strawberry milk oil mess. I just ran the rod in and out until the oil stopped. Then I put some paper towel in each fitting to catch/ stop any oil. Taped the paper towel right in. The power steering motor still was draining oil last night when messing with the CV joint. If you don't turn the steering wheel much it will not drain much oil.

I just roughed up the cylinder paint with sand paper and taped off the rod and ends. My cylinder paint was pretty good to start with. Outcome was good. Better than if I left it on the machine.

My paint is not the same as original color. I have used the Rustoleum 2x Ultra Gloss Marigold for all the yellow. It is not orange enough to match the original color of this machine. That does bother me a bit but now that is all the same color I am at peace with it. I am still looking for a match to the original white for the lift arms and eventually the deck because I have a NOS 385 mule drive.

Got some more shop time in this morning. Engine drive shaft coupler greased and installed. New fan belt installed . Lamented over the wiring- certainly not my forte. And removed the starter to mod the bracket ala Sam Mac's tutelage . I used a metal eating die grinder. It hogged right through the plate. The top hole got away from me and concerns me a bit. Should be OK. Getting closer to putting the engine back in. Wife made me go to town with her and the kids. She has a coupon......

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
