A minor update on this 122. I replaced the harness which was melted throughout, slapped on one of the Chinese carbs that are sitting around here, de-stuck the throttle cable (which was rusted so it wouldn't move) and replaced the plug wire, plug and cleaned the points. I also removed the headlight switch and wiring , and cleaned it up to it'll be ready to use when I run new wiring.

I removed the gas tank which had about 1/4" of what looked like thick molasses in it (and the sediment bowl) and hooked up my favorite temporary gas tank (a ketchup squeezer with some gas in it, and the nozzle stuck into fresh gas line) and it fired up. There was no smoke (except for dirt coming out of the muffler) . I didn't let it run for more than a few sec, as I want to change the oil in it before I do.

Sounds healthy. I'll let the gas tank soak for a while before I put some fuel in it.

This thing has sat a VERY long time rusting away , since the PO hosed up the wiring. Oh, if only old cubs could talk.

You should always put fresh oil in before you start an engine that has been sitting that long. Really should do it to the rear too. I guess your signature is right. Oh well, not my tractor.

You know, instead of whining, you should listen to people whow know more than you do. You might learn something. Yes, I could probably have said that nicer, but seriously, if something has been sitting that long, running it with old likely watery oil is like trying to start it on whatever gas is in the tank. Likely to cause irreversible damage. Oil is cheap.

One of my 123's had the negative ground connection from the battery - to one of the pivot bolts of the gen rather than to the bolt from tower to frame.

This tractor demonstrated why that's not a bad idea. The solenoid would clunk like a vehicle does with a low battery. I knew the battery was good and derusted- cleaned the joint between the gen and the casting that the gen is mounted on.

That fixed the no-crank. Every tenth of an ohm counts when you're trying to pull 100 amps or so during a cold start.
