Do as you wish, I myself,
would not impose on a person to do the machining it requires to set up a vertical block to horiz.usage,
when blocks are available, and reasonable priced.

Doing it yourself for self gratification, like building a ship in a bottle is something else, and rewarding.

Do it the easy way with a horizontal block!!

Doing the dipstick hole is a task, do you have a 16" long drill bit?
assuredly no.
believe me it is an involved process, with many steps.
I'm am not trying to make myself out here as a genius, just BTDT and I would not do it again.
it is not something you can fudge or get close enough.
Either it is done right or it goes bad in a hurry.
Just trying to help.
All that said,
I'd buy the MV, it is worth that in parts if in good shape.
Then look for a horiz.block & crank.
This time of the year parts are a little less costly due to lessor demand.

Well he’s retired and just does it for fun. I haven’t poked around his shop, but you’re probably right.

I’ve also got that kt17ii with a cracked block I could just get a new block for and rebuild too I guess. Probably be in it about the same either way.

Decisions decisions.

Thanks again! Very grateful for your expertise.

I wouldn't waste the time to either rebuild the KT or do a vertical to horizontal conversion. That engine isn't worth the effort.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
