Default Restoring an old 1200 - First Time questions

Hi Everyone,

First time posting. My son who is 13 loves old IH Cubs and we found an old 1200 that needs alot of work. He has been involved with tractors of all sorts since he was literally a baby but this is our first try at fixing first and then restoring to the best of our ability second. while we have a shop and tools we are not experts by any stretch.

at this point it runs but doesn't and we think its a clutch issue, so that will hopefully be a fix later. for now we are tearing it apart slowly and have these initial questions

1) the serial number is 591738 which from what i can tell seems to be a 76-77? would like to confirm that if possible, and then what the official paint colors were?

2) is it still possible to get decals? if so, where do you get these?

3) Is it possible to still get an owners/service manual somewhere? online?

4) when tearing it apart there are missing bolts and other parts that should be replaced with new parts, does this help or hurt a restore? there is no way to get all original at this point and we would need to replace alot of the nuts, bolts, etc just curious on this?

4) its the original engine from what I have been told, are there rebuild kits for an engine and carb for this?

5) my son asks what is needed for gaskets on the transmission? thats beyond me lol

Thats about it for now, have been looking at all the great rebuild posts here and trying to learn as much as possible. thanks for the help

Hi

Thanks so much for the welcome and answers! and so quickly, very much appreciated. This is all new to us.

Just a quick follow up, when you say "no" do you mean its ok to use new bolts and things to replace broken ones or ones totally missing? or its not? sorry i had asked if it was or wasn't ok so just want to clarify

and

i talked to my son just now and he said the one "around the shifter", there is a plate and 9 bolts and it leaks? sorry he may not be accurate with calling it part of the transmition.

thanks so much! and thanks for the other help thats awesome here!

Unless you are a Purist and looking for the ultimate Pure Restoration, using new bolts, washers, and nuts are just fine. Further, IF....you were to buy OEM replacement hardware, you will pay 3 to 10 times more what you can get it locally.

In looking up parts, here is the Cub Cadet Parts Lookup Site.... http://www.cubcadet.com/equipment/cu...vice-and-parts

Type in your model and away you go.

As far as the Top Gasket....Order IH-351546-R2 from your local Cub Cadet, or Case/IH dealers. If that is not good, try the sponsors at the top of the page.

great! thats a relief actually lol. thanks again for all the info and help!

yes, i will take some tonight and post for you. we do not have all the proper painting tools to do this professionally and alot of it will be taking our time and trying to learn it all as we go but my son is VERY excited to rebuild this and get it running.

He has an old JD 318 and his grandfather has a 1940 farmall he drives and loves.

But, he picked an IH cub cadet as the love to rebuild and fix up.

thanks for the links as well. I couldn't find the manual yet in the section here but am still looking.

i am sure we will have many more questions as we go. I will try and get some pics up tomorrow or soon

thanks!

Get a sheet of gasket paper from your local auto parts house and make your own Transmission gaskets. Easy and a whole lot cheaper. A gasket hole punch set would be a big help as well.
Good luck and have some quality time w/your boy.
At that age, they need all they can get to keep them on the straight and narrow!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
