Thank you for all your input everyone I just went out and looked at it and it has an the aluminum upper grill frame and the wires do go through the firewall. Which from what you're saying would indicate that it's a later one which would mean not pre production at all but late production

Early to mid production had cast iron lower grill frame and the exhaust protruded through the grill. Amp gauges varied cosmetically, too. Later production had one inch front spindles and cast aluminum rear axle tubes.

It's early because it has the long exhaust pipe with the hole in the grille. But that doesn't mean its pre production... that may be hard to prove with no tag.. You might ask the family if they have any paperwork or a bill of sale?

I was going to try to get that lot and split the pieces up. I wanted the 1200 and the IH cast weights, and friend wanted the snowplow.

1" front axles started at ser #632502 according to the parts book I have.
And the QL series started at ser #530001 and ran through #664996.
As others have stated, a good sales pitch story!!

I have a 1000 that was made in August if 1977 that I have known since it was new. I also have a 1450 that was made in January 1975. The 1000 has the short exhaust tip that does not protrude past the metal screen. The 1450 has the long tip that comes through a hole in the screen. The 1000 has the cast aluminum lower grill and the 1450 has the cast iron lower grill.

It has the lower cast front grill frame and it has the cast iron axle tubes so I will say its a early one from what most of you are saying. Would any of the casting numbers on the rear help determine anything?

Casting numbers won't help. Serial number on the engine would, if it's the original motor.... but seriously, who caresponded what year it is. It's really irrelevant.

IF, you are lucky, the engine tag will tell you the year the engine was built.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
