Looking at that fan, it blows air out the front.
I'm thinking you would cook the oil if it had a oil cooler in front of the engine. JD uses a hydro cooler on the intake side of the engine and I always thought that was a good idea. I don't see what it would hurt to put one on but I'm not sure how well it would work without any shroud around it. I thought about something like that for the air cooled 3k machines because to me, they run hotter than other models do.

The Kohler Command rotates CCW from the PTO end. Thus the fan would blow forward.

Without a shroud, it isn't going to do anything for the components behind it. Besides... it isn't going to move any air from all the way back there with a bigger fan blowing behind it. It would be totally useless for engine cooling. Again, whatever tractor it is on, it is for cooling something else, not the engine. |

Possibly they are wanting some air movement in the electric clutch area.
If it is a newer mower it has those gubber-mint safety requirements that the clutch cycles every time you go fwd/rev. and @ full engine speed. so those conditions are creating heat from the clutch and brake, as well as the dual belts on the pullies. it will move a little air so maybe their engineering tests showed it was worth instillation and cost associated. I'm sure their testing showed the need or it would not be installed, as cost cutting is paramount in today's competitive world. --- just my thoughts |

I would think a small electric fan attached to the grille would work better but that might be to much for the electrical system.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
