Project 982
Well, here's the next one I drug out of the old chicken barn. A 1984 CCC built 984(982). A 984 has the rear lift and PTO but not the front ports.
DSCN2128.jpg This one is in pretty good shape with a little over 1000 hours on the meter......but the Onan is locked up. DSCN2130.jpg DSCN2131.jpg I pulled the motor and broke out the pressure washer. She cleaned up pretty good and the original paint should buff out nice...I hope. DSCN2158.jpg Wheeled her into the shop to pull the rear and do all the normal stuff. Here is a shot of the rear pto. DSCN2174.jpg The rear looked good and the Hytran did its job. Just a little bit of gel on the bottom. This one will get Hytran put back in it. DSCN2178.jpg Check this out. The brake hub is cracked and the aluminum caliper mount is broke in half. I'm pulling the axles to replace the seals and drill the drain holes so I will see if I can weld the hub. DSCN2171.jpg DSCN2180.jpg

me too
That's some pretty impressive damage, considering the rest of the tractor looks so nice.
You probably need to change or check those frame bolts too, That took a pretty nasty lick to break that hub like that.

Broken brake caliper? Suppose someone wrapped a chain around it/axle tube and towed it? How about the axle tube, any sign of damage like something big ran into the wheel? Don't now if they are the same but I saw a caliper for a 782/1811 on ebay a couple days ago for $10. after I spent 30 minutes getting a broken bolt out of one.

Just a thought, do you have a dial indicator you can put on the face of the axle where the bolts are to see if it is bent? Dad had a Cub brought to him once that jumped out the back of a trailer going down the highway. This was a early 70's machine, no aluminum, it bent the axles. We swapped rears with another machine brought in the week before with a blown engine.

I'd like to have a 982 in my collection if you ever happen to run across one down this way.. Seems our northern friends keep them all hoarded up!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
