Default New Cub Model 86

I bought an 86 with a blown engine today. I bought it for the 38" deck, planning on parting it out. Other than the engine, most of it is in good shape. It has sat tarped for 5 years according to the seller. It has a bit of rust, not bad. Aside from not running, the big problem seems to be the very loose shifter. It shifts, but has side to side play, like something is broken.

First up, I'll get the mower deck lubed and clean enough to mow on the model 72. I have a mowing crisis since my 48" deck went down this week.

Maybe this winter, I'll tear apart the engine and see how broken it is. I might learn to rebuild with this one, its already broken so I can't make it worse. Maybe I'll part it out, or maybe I'll move the good engine from the 72 to this one?
The PTO looks different from my narrow frames, is it?
What about the steering column and manual lift? Do they inter change from a wide frame to a narrow frame (72 and 147)?

I wouldn't part that out if I were you...the 86 is somewhat rare.

Nice 86 The motor from the 72 will not work in it and the lift arm wont work on the 72.but I think the column will work. The pto will work on any cub that uses that style. Why not keep the deck and pass along the tractor to the next victim...

I wouldn't part it out either due to the rarity factor. The eight horse motor in the 86 has a longer crankshaft coming out of the PTO side to move the PTO forward to help line up the mule drive. Those motors are harder to find. Hold onto it and try to fix whatever's broken. Hopefully you can salvage both the motor and the tractor. Thanks for sharing the pics!

You all burst my bubble, I was hoping the K161 from the 72 would work.
If I ever do part it out, it won't be soon, and I'll let you all talk me out of it. For now, I need the 38" deck to cut the grass. I'll get the forum's advise when I take apart the engine. I need to learn to fix a K series, since I have 3 others, two of which use some oil.

The man I bought it from is the grandson of the original owner. He is 51, so he was about 12 when his grandfather bought it. The grandfather let him mow with it as a teen. The tractor also has the original owner's manual, which I love.

Is there another tractor or machine that uses a K181 that would be an almost direct change out? My Ford 80 has one, but that tractor works too well to scrap. I can't see spending hundreds to rebuild the engine at this point. If you are looking for an 86 project, let me know. I'm in no hurry, I have garage space for plenty, and my three bigger sons (5, 3, 2) each have their own tractor to sit on. At the least, I got this machine out of the rain.

I don't know what I'll do with this tractor, yet.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
