Its not closed. Just stuck together for photo purposes (and for my own inventory of what parts are missing...). Need a seal and a gasket, then will grease and put together permanently.

I wouldn't bother with the cork gasket. I'd silicone the two halves together.

This project continues at its own pace.... (there was a reason I started in July!!)
What gearbox grease is acceptable. There is a cub cadet brand listed on the parts list, but I was more interested in something I could pick up at NAPA.... |

Is there a way to grease these after they are assembled? If not I'd put a grease fitting in it some place. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, there is a plug at the top of the housing. Regular grease from a grease gun seemed too thick to me (rotating gears), but i don't know.... Will lookup the description on the cub cadet recommended and see what it is.

As a side note, I have one apart that I have to get back together before winter. I'm adding a zerk and intend to grease it regularly. The plug in the top is vented, so the grease should come out of it, but honestly, I think no better than the seals are, it will ooze out the seals too. Just my |

calls for this stuff:
http://www.epc.shell.com/Docs/GPCDOC...80762_1669.pdf Im not sure how the viscosity compares to whats in my grease gun. I agree the gear box doesnt seem sealed that tight. The plug is at the top and I cant see any issues pumping grease into it. A zerk doesnt hurt I guess, but not sure it matters on this one. Now there are bushings at each end of the auger. I was wondering if I could cross drill some zerk fittings into these. Otherwise running on whatever residual oil/grease I can get to stay in there. |

For what ever it's worth I used to own a Yamaha snow blower that ran 140W gear oil in the box. I don't see why that wouldn't work in one of these or maybe out board motor lower unit lube.

I used regular hi temp synthetic wheel bearing grease with a little Royal Purple gear oil mixed in just because I had some left over. Right or wrong thats what I did and never had a problem last year. You put the grease in before you assemble the case halves.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
