Default Another 1641 followed me home

I picked up a 500 hour 1641 today on my way home from Maryland. PO says it has a broken rod, but I’ll see what it is when I start looking at it. It runs and doesn’t knock but it’s definitely on one cylinder. It has a 44c deck, and it’s the cleanest tractor I’ve brought home yet, has been garage kept. It’s missing the side hood panels, but is otherwise intact and very clean.

Yup, itś a broken rod. I tore it down tonight to see what was the matter. The rod is disintegrated, and aluminum smeared all over the crank journal.

Nice tractor! Too bad on the broken rod! That's a bit unusual for 500 hrs.. wonder if they ran it hot or low on oil?

Yeah I thought so also. It’s clean inside and out, the oil was still clear (though may have been recently changed) but I don’t see any signs of abuse. It’s not clogged up with dirt or anything. It’s weird. It was garage kept and owned by an old man.

I'd stick a new engine in it or at least a good used one.

I'm keeping an eye out for an engine, and I'll just park this one off to the side until I run one down. I got it pulled apart the rest of the way, I'm thinking what happened is the grommet around the oil fill tube was 3/4 missing, and what was left is hard as a rock, so I think that went down in the engine and maybe plugged up an oil passage or something. The rod completely melted itself to the crank for one piston, and the other one looks perfectly fine. The bore looks fine, no damage anywhere else that I can see. To rebuild it, it takes a NLA crankshaft which looks like it'll be hard to find used, there are plenty out there on ebay for the vertical engines, and the newer engines. It needs a piston and a rod, and while it's apart, seals, grommet, and cover gasket. If I find another engine or another tractor like a 2165 with a good engine, I'll be good to go.

Hey Sam, did you see that 300 hour 1864 in Lancaster PA I posted in the Craigslist Deals?

Well, to update this, I didn't put this project aside very long because I ran across a crank and pistons and rods on the flea bay for what I felt was a decent price, and ordered new seals and a crank case gasket and put it all back together after cleaning the engine carcass out real well to get all the aluminum flakes out. Everything went in perfectly, and I put it all back together, borrowed a batter from one of my other tractors, and started cranking the engine over. Nothing. Won't start. I checked and I have sparks on both sides. So next I started looking at the carburetor because I didn't smell gas, and I didn't see gas being pulled into the venturi when turning it over. I pulled the fuel line off and turned it over and gas flies out of it, so the fuel pump is working good. I noticed I don't hear a click of the shut off solenoid, so I pulled that out and noticed it's not working. I pushed the plunger in and gas squirts out, it sounds like maybe a diaphragm inside it is bad and left gas inside it. After working it a few times by hand and squirting gas out of it every time I pushed it in, it now works about half with the key. So since it needs replaced anyway, for diagnostic purposes I cut the end off of the plunger and put it back in so it won't obstruct the jet and I'll see if it'll start. Now when I turn it over I see large drops of gas splashing out and getting sucked down into the engine, and now I smell gas. Seems like way too much gas going down in there, so now I will take apart the carburetor and give it a good clean out and see whats going on in there... which means I have to pull the engine back out to get the cover off (a third time) to get to the bolts to remove the carburetor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
