Default Field-expedient repair

So, while waiting for a new clutch, I took a look at the old one. Mine is not air-gap adjustable. I could clearly tell by the unworn area near the hub that about .010" had been lost in the plate thickness, opening the air gap well beyond spec. So when the clutch got warm and expanded, it would let go.
What sets the gap is the length of the hub on the intermediate plate - closest to the engine. By reducing the length of the hub that should close up the air gap by whatever amount is removed.
So I took it over to the lathe and trimmed it a bit, shooting for .010" based on the Mk1 Eyeball. Just took a touch.

Once home, I zipped it back on and headed to the unfinished front yard. I finished mowing and then cycled it a few times. It seems as good as it ever was, possibly a bit better. The only possible negative is the blades do not stop as quickly, probably because the gap to the brake magnets changed. Might be my imagination as I never paid that much attention before.
So that worked out, and I have a working mower. I'll still change out the clutch (and grille shell - thanks Sam) but in the meantime I can keep up with chores.

Thanks for all the input guys, it was very helpful.

Followup - Looks like my short-term fix was exactly that. Somehow when it gets hot it kills the motor, just like it's running out of gas. If I flick the PTO switch off, the motor perks back up. Time to order that clutch.

At least it got me through the last mowing season.

Make sure it is not the deck that is pulling the motor down.

Shouldn't be. I had just finished greasing the spindles and sharpening the blades. Then I mowed a bit, was almost done when it started dying. I had to let it cool before I could cut the rest.

But good point, I'll spin it when I remove the belt.

I went ahead and ordered a clutch, because I know it's on it's living on borrowed time.

My Cub uses the 5218-6 clutch which is the non-adjustable version. Looking at it, I think I can close the airgap by machining the center hub where it contacts the front (outer) bearing. My question is how to know how much to take off.

Anyone else here tried this?

BTW, the cheapest clutch I found was $125, which is probably what I'll end up doing. But I did find the same clutch here for $21.99!

I don't have the courage to try it though
What is this site? Direct from China?

I don't know. I walked down the buying process until I got to payment. I saw they don't take Paypal or AMEX, and I bailed. I would have ordered otherwise, just to see what happens.

I agree. But the site is still up, and the price is up 20% from last year.

Yep, Chinese, but apparently no reviews or scam reports. Just marked as risky due to country of origin:

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
