I don't know why I am having such a hard time with this. OK. One belt is much longer than the other.
Does the longest belt go around JUST the 3 deck pullies using the bottom of the two outside spindles ??

Does the shorter belt go around the PTO then the top pullies of only the outside spindles ?

I went and looked at the Parts Diagram again. After the second look, it is a very poor depiction of the belts. The "deck" belt is on top of the PTO belt, which in real life is the other way around.

So, the 954-0640 BELT A x 79.10", seems to be the right belt. It does not help the CC didn't label the belt differences in their description.

So it looks like I am trying to install those backwards ! The shorter belt is on the deck only. I need to go get another belt, then. If that doesn't fix it, I will get back on here.
Thanks to everyone for their help !!

If you paid attention, your question was already correctly answered with supporting documentation in post #2..

If YOU had payed attention , you would have seen that the parts diagram was inaccurate.

The short belt goes on the top of the pulley and the longer one on the bottom as Rolands picture shows.
Still having difficulty go here and download your manual.

SOLVED ! Mark this thread closed.
Thanks to all of you who took the time to help.

I went back to the shop & showed them the diagram from the manual. They told me what I was doing wrong. Ha ! They were wrong, too. I bought the shorter belt & installed both.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
