Default 451 blower on a 2072

Don't know if this a kosher modification, but I picked up a nice 451 blower for my 2072. Didn't do all the diligence and realized CC geared down the input side on the 451 to compensate for the larger PTO pulley. Did some looking for a different PTO and quickly found the M20 Kohler to have an odd crank size and no apparent options for the electric clutch. Finding good 450 gears was probably going to be equally expensive as any PTO.

So, I went the route of changing out the blower pulley--smaller input pulley to speed up the shaft. Common shaft and keyway size. Found a cast pulley for just over $20: 5.25 inches versus 7 inch OEM. The only adjustment I had to make was to fit a spacer to hold the pulley away from the housing. (The OEM hub is smaller than the AM cast hub and fit into the gearcase. I ground down a couple washers.) This also let me slide the pulley a bit closer to the lower idlers and reduce the side pull on the belt. And I had to use a longer shaft bolt.

The only thing left to do is get a shorter drive belt.

Time will tell if slippage and torque will be a problem. I have zero experience with snowblowers.

Looking good...Those are very heavy hope you have some weight in the back...!

Also, did you put the support brace on the Rockshaft and deck lift arms to help stiffen it up? If you done have one you can make one from flat steel and bend it to fit...

Weights are my next project. I'm doing this earlier rather than later to stay ahead of the weather. Chains are in the mail as well.

I've heard talk about this bracket but haven't seen a good picture of one. Do you have one?

Just thought I'd report that this setup seems to be a success. I took her for a spin in the snowfall we had earlier this weekend. Found a couple drifts and cleared the driveway. Not reason to worry about the belt slipping on the smaller pulley I installed on the gearbox. Blower was tossing snow a good 20 feet in the deeper stuff. Found 2 sets of wheel weights plus the chains. The chute tilt controls are kind of nice to have, once I figured out how to install it.

The cast pulleys seem to do better at transferring power to a belt than stamped pulleys do.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
