Different bores for a K161??
OK obviously this is my first time working on a 7hp Kohler. The service manual for the 73 is showing a new bore for the block to measure: 2.8745" and the Kohler service manual shows a new bore for the block to measure: 2.9380. From my measurements the latter size is what I am dealing with albeit it is out of spec some. I was just a bit confused is all, of course that is my usual state of mind.
Anyway if anyone has some input on the differences I would appreciate it. Also according the to book, the only difference between a K161 and a K181 is the stroke of the crank. A 1/4" difference. What is the best way to measure and see what the stroke is? This engine is a replacement block with all the cub tin put on it, so I can't even go by Spec and or Serial number to see what I have. Unless there is some markings on the block I could look for. The only thing that stands out is a B 4 on the PTO side with what looks like a clock dial of sorts between the B and 4 either pointing to 11 or 5 on a clock face. At any rate I have the motor apart and hopefully can get going on getting it rebuilt soon. See how the $$$ goes..

I don't know if these would be like the k241 and k301, some of them are marked right above crank shaft hole on pto side, but I not sure on this size block.

The stroke is the distance the piston moves up/down.
measure the distance the piston travels, that will be your stroke. if it's all the way flush with the top of the block and it moves down 3" and starts back up one would say it has a 3" stroke |

The early K161s had a 2.8745 bore diameter. The later ones had a 2.9380 bore diameter. I'm not sure when the change to the bigger bore was made. My 70 had the small bore diameter. It now has the big bore diameter.
There isn't any external markings beside the plate on the fan shroud. Hopefully someone can post the serial number when the change was made. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
