The pulleys are rubbing the front axle? Or the frame? If they are rubbing the front axle, your belt is too short. If the are hitting the front of the mule drive, your belt is too long.

Go here to learn how to post pics:
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=1024

Then post a pic of the problem area you have.

Default Got the correct belt... need spring

Okay, here goes,
It turns out that the belt that I had put on there was a 1/2" belt.... 80" long!!! OOOOPPPPS!! My bust.... Now I have the right belt, but it keeps throwing it as I can't get it tight enough without the spring side rubbing the axle. I am close... but it looks like the non-stock spring that I bent and put in there is too long. I am recovering from shoulder surgery and not able to tweak the spring anymore in my current condition. So, here is my question.... where can I find a new extension spring??? Or what is the part number??? I have looked everywhere that I can think of, but can't find a parts diagram of the mule drive to get the parts number.

Thanks,

John

Call-out #5. Part number IH-489607-R4. Still available. It's about $7.

Default pulley size?

J-mech,
Thanks for that info... I actually had done some more digging and found the part number, but no place to get it.
I managed to shorten the spring that I have... I found my little propane torch.... I think that it is about the right length, and have installed the belt, but it keeps jumping on me. The tension seems good on the belt, but the second that I start to engage the pto the belt jumps. I know that my dad replaced the pulleys, but I am wondering if they are the right size. Do you have the diameter and the width of them?

John

John, how about you post a pic of what you have. It would be much easier that way.

Jonathan,
I will get the pictures tomorrow and post them. I am also going to look on the cub cadet website and see if they list the sizes of the pulleys. Knowing my dad.... he just grabbed something that he thought was close, but ended up with something a nudge too small. The guy is a flippin genius, but he has been known to out smart himself occasionally.

It's just a pulley for a belt. Unless he grabbed one that was like 2" smaller, close is good enough. .5", or even an inch different would make little difference. Besides, I think they are 3" pulleys. Hard to find any smaller than that for that size of belt.

Default Hopefully I can post these pictures

Okay,
I am on my laptop, so lets see if I can post some pictures of the mule drive that I am fighting with.... Note.... The pulleys do look original, so that shouldn't be a problem, the belt is correct size, still no problem.... the spring is something I got a Tractor Supply and am modifying by shortening and rebending with a blow torch.... I am thinking that I am still a little long, as I am not getting a gap in the spring coils when pulleys are about even with each other. And it jumped off again, right after I took the pictures... The deck will just start to engage as I ease the handle into the run position... and then the belt will jump.

I can see one issue already. Your belt is too big (wide). The belt isn't seating all the way down in the groove (especially on the tractor's righ side pulley) and is therefore popping out. If you get the correct belt, your issues will probably go away. If you want new pulleys too, I have bought these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's a 1/2 wide belt. Look at the pic again. The tape reads 5/8 but it's hooked over the edge of the pulley

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
