Well the key electrically was as was mentioned before. Check all grounds. After cleaning up and painting the battery tray, I used a dremel tool to clean up all the terminal washers, remove the paint from all grounding surfaces and used all new hardware to reassemble.

Turned the key and she fired right up and kept on running. All of the dash lights and the headlights work including the hour meter which now reads 801.

One of my flare ends in the hyd repair is leaking slightly. I was concerned as the flare tool, although brand new, was cheap. I suspect the leaking one is the one that didn't do the first flare properly. It ended up a nice single flare but I'm sure that's the one. The good news is since I can disconnect it two places, I won't have to remove the battery tray to get it out and reflare it.

The steering gear has a lot of slop. The links are pretty good just a good 1/4 turn in the steering wheel before the arm starts moving. I see in the service manual you can adjust the cam follower. I know.... make sure I don't make it too tight so that it binds on the extremes.

Instructions say adjust before installing the unit so I may have to remove the steering gear to adjust it?

I've never had good luck doing double flares, that's why I use the Aeroquip stuff I told you about.

Much easier to work on the steering box if it's out. Probably needs to be cleaned out anyway. Also a good time to repack the CV joint in the steering column, behind and under the battery tray.

Thanks again Sam.

I was able to adjust the steering gear without removing the battery tray or the steering gear. There is just enough room to get in there with a wrench and loosen the jam nut. I simply unscrewed and removed the whole adjusting pin. I backed the nut way off. Re-installed the pin and tighten with my finger while wiggling the steering wheel until I felt it seated with the play removed. This was with the steering in a max turn position. Then I tightened the jam nut. Worked like a charm.

Fixed the hyd line leak by removing the lines. I was able to get them out with just taking the battery out. With that spliced in piece, it made it easy. I looked the fitting over. Everything looked fine so I just re-installed and made it tighter.

Welded the hood hinge which was broke on one side. If anybody is looking to purchase a new mig welder I have to recommend the one I'm using. It's new and I have only used it a few times but let me tell you the control is just incredible. Miller 200 Multimatic. The hood hinge is like .040 thick. The welder has an auto feature with an LCD screen. Set the thickness and it sets the wire speed and power. Holds an arc perfectly and doesn't burn through. It will also stick and tig.

Anyway, tractor is finished. Everything works like factory except the PTO. Could be the switch but I don't care as I am not going to be needing it.

What's up with the brakes? Are they really supposed to work with those springs?

Total investment approx $250

Thanks all. Hoping to get a good five years minimum out of her. No mowing duties.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
