well I figured out what was wrong with my governor.... pics
After talking to Dwayne (DX3) on the phone this afternoon for a little while I decided I was better safe then sorry to go ahead and tear into the engine, and im glad I did!
Heres what I found : Notice any thing ? The governor gear is wedged up in the top corner over the cam gear. I'm amazed this engine didn't get destroyed. I also found this in the oil pan : Im guessing its a portion of the governor gear that the set screw holds in place? also found this in the oil pan... Does any one know what it is ??? [EDIT] I figured out what this is while I was laying in bed last night pondering the up coming rebuild... its gotta be the button in the end of the governor gear that pushes the xshaft tab... how it made it to the bottom on the pan and not into a set of gears is beyond me!!! [edit] Im also amazed at how clean the engine is inside... i wonder if it has been previously rebuilt ??? the balance gears are still inside also, but not for long. The cylinder even still shows some cross hatch... Also, does any one know if all these stickers are in factory locations?? I didnt even know they were there until I wiped off all the dirt and grime... So stay tuned.... a rebuilt is soon to follow, along with a chassis cleaning and possibly a repaint. we'll see how much free time I have over the next few weeks ! *** and a proper seat..... no more john deere jokes please!!!

Allen got a pic of your piston looking down on it? If the engine has been machined before the pistion will have a .010, .020 or .030 stamped on it. Sweet pics by the way!

That little pin is part of the governor. I think your engine has been shortblocked at some point, as there's some extra stickers there.

Shortblock...most of the engine has been replaced at some point, and the additional stickers reflect the serial and spec number of the replacement shortblock.

WOW I am real glad you decided to pull it apart and check it. I wasn't prepared for that. Also as Matt says, I think you have a replacement shortblock possibly. I only have one sticker on my fan housing the one that says it is a 12 HP.

Wow, that's a bit of good luck.
Get some more pictures of that governor gear and shaft once you get it all apart, please...I'm interested in seeing how it came off the shaft. Is the shaft broken, or did the gear split in half? And yeah, you're right - that pin was the one that pops up when the governor engages. There are several pics of a new governor gear on this page of my 1650 thread. |

i dont have it out yet, there isnt enough room for it to pass the cam gear. its intact though.. the only thing I can figure is the stop pin backed out some point in the past, and the po just put the screw back in not knowing any better! there are some chunks missing from the gear, you can kinda see that in one of my pins.. the Xshaft is not broken, and the stop screw looks fine also. it just came by by magic I guess!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
