Default 1250 running hot.

A friend of mine has a nice running easy starting 1250. After several minutes of running the muffler is red hot glowing. I'm sure some of you motor guys can give me a direction on what the issue could be. Thanks.

The blower housing is probably filled with mouse nest, the carb might also be running lean. As fast as you say it heats up I'm leaning towards both contributing to the issue.

I also agree. I will add that a worn out (thin) muffler will also heat up very quickly. But even a wore out muffler shouldn't glow red hot that quickly.


So, it's time to:
*Pull the engine to remove all the tins and clean it.
*Overhaul the fuel sytem
*Tune it up (clean/file points, change: spark plug and wire)
*Readjust the governor

While it's out, it's a good time to:
*Pull the head, decarbon the combustion chamber. (As hot as it's getting, that would be a really good idea. Make sure you don't already have damage from it.)
*Adjust the valves
*While you have the blower housing and tins off, find and paint the timing marks so you can see them to use when you tune it up and adjust the timing.
*Check the rubber ISO mounts for wear.
*Check the rubber driveshaft coupler for wear.

Fix and replace as necessary. The joys of a QL tractor!

I agree with Jon about pulling the head off, as hot as it's getting I guarantee the head gasket is blown. Make sure to resurface the head while it's off since it's most likely warped, here's a video done by a weirdo on that process.

All good suggestions and I will add that when mine was doing exactly that, it turned out to be timing. The spark was retarded (points opening too late) so combustion was happening in the muffler. Adjusting the timing made all the difference in the world.
