K161 runs clockwise?
I have a k161 on my shop floor, I believe it was in a Cub Original. It is rope start, and I want to see if it will run but I'm not sure which way to wind the rope. Looking at the blower housing I think it would go clockwise, is that right?

There is only one way you can wind the rope..... that's not hard to figure out.

I was intrigued by this thread regarding something so seemingly obvious. I found the Operator's Manual in the technical library and saw the electric start models has this odd little plate with the two notches that the OP is showing. Perhaps this is a backup method if the electric start fails. Manual start models for the "O" has the typical rope start assembly mounted to the the blower housing.

Rope start or recoil start k161s for the O have a Fairbanks Morse recoil assembly on them. Looks like you just have the normal k161 O drive pulley that drives the driveshaft via a belt. Do a starter generator come with it? I'm assuming you want to start it to see if it runs before you sell it?

Don't work that way, it uses the center of the pulley to engage the dogs on the recoil.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
