Default 782

I'm thinking of buying a Red 782 does anyone know when these were built. I've read that they were built from 79-81 and also read they were built from 80-85 does anyone know. this 782 has had the engine replaced with a kohler 18hp. What is a good price to pay for this it has been garage kept and all original except for the engine. nice paint and tires look new no dents just normal wear.

According to Kenneth Updike's book, 782's were built from July 1980 till June 1981 then when CCC purchased IH cub cadet they continued building them until 1985.
My 784 is a 1982 model which means it was built by CCC not IH, but still has the heavy cast rear end as it was an early CCC model.

Default Sounds like a good find

Good luck on getting a price. Photos might help It sounds like a great find to me. Maybe you could go on one of the auction sites and check completed sales to get an estimate of the value (hope I didn't get into hot water for that comment). I hope to have the one I'm restoring done within a month or so. Nice, well built tractor.

The 782's came with a 17 HP Kohler and had oiling problems and died a early death.
Thus many were fitted with the series II kohlers and the Magnums.
Sounds like that one has been updated.
You will never regret buying it and if wisely purchased, it will return as much or more than you paid in years to come.
Try that with modern equipment

I think they started in '79...I have an October 1979 682.

IH-built (with red cast iron rearend and red front axle) built through the middle of 1981 or so. CCC took over and made them until 1985. The CCC units will have a black front axle, rear, and dash tower, except for earlier ones before s/n 719,999 that had a mixture of CCC and leftover IH parts. All tractors before s/n 719,999 have a cast iron rear, and all after that have the aluminum rearend. There are some other minor differences between the IH and CCC-built tractors that probably aren't worth mentioning unless you're going to be doing a 100% correct restoration.

All in all, the 782s are good tractors and very popular. I have one myself.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
