Default K301 hard to crank

Got a k301 in a 129. It's hard to crank, pulled the spark plug and it spins freely. Pulled the cam cover and checked the ACR and springs are in tact. The points have been timed. Carburetor has been cleaned, starter generator is good, all grounds checked. Rear end fluid and filter changed also. I have got it to fire after much resistance and it runs good and mows well, checked it out lastnight. Any ideas? Was thinking about moving this one but kinda stuck with it until I get this resolved. Thanks

Moving as in selling? Or mowing?

Here is a link to a post where the person had a similar problem. Don't know if this will help.

Richard, thanks for the speedy response, i have the cam cover removed, can I see this tab from that? Honestly not sure what I'm looking for. I'll remove the engine and pan if I need to but don't want to if not needed

I guess this always had this issue or is it something that it just started doing?
Did you adjust the valves?

I don't know if you can see the tab with the cam cover removed or not, but it is the tab that opens the exhaust valve slightly during the compression stroke providing the compression release. You can remove the valve cover and see if the exhaust valve moves slightly on the compression stroke.

I'm uncertain how long this issue has existed, don't know much about the history of it. It has for me anyhow. Adjusted valves, didn't make a difference. I'm gonna try advancing the timing a bit.

You may want to check your grounds on the mounting bracket for the S/G, and there should be a ground strap going from that bracket to the frame/grill attaching bolts.

I have a 126 and in the winter it's always a bear to start...cranks really slow as the weather cools. I have replaced the wire harness (brand new) and the starter Gen (as they needed it). Short of it is, it's always done it so I just keep the battery maintainer on her in winter and it rectifys the situation. In the summer I never have a problem cranking - only cold weather lol.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
