K321 may be toast!
I got the PTO bearing and pulley off the K321 and got the crank out, along with the balance gears, only to discover a catastrophe.
The bottom of the cylinder wall has a chunk broken out, about 1/2 inch in length up the wall. Looks like it broke a rod in the past and it damaged the cylinder wall and also cracked the crank case. You can't see that crack from outside, there is no oil leakage through it. So where do I go from here, start searching for a new block of Epay? I am attaching a couple photos. I intended to take it to the machine shop and have the cylinder bored and the crank turned, but I may not have anything they will touch. Now what? |

Yep
Its time for Plan B now. See where this goes from here, thanks for the help, but you have confirmed what I had already thought. Junk...boat anchor material.

block crack
Its not that I had my heart set on using that block, its the fact that I had worked on that project for a couple weeks and had not seen that piece broken off the bottom of the cylinder walls. I had noticed the crack, but really hadn't thought it out that the rod had broken previously and done that.
I'm not as observant as I use to be I guess. My son found a used block in Tulsa real quick, going to see it tomorrow. Dave |

Crack
Bill thats a pretty good crack in the block. While its not visible on the outside of the crankcase, its there.
No more than another block cost, I think it would not be wise to use this one, even if it could be repaired. Starting out with a good one and doing a rebuild, should be a good engine for another 40 years (I hope) Thanks for the information. I'm 67 years old and use to surprises. I heard a guy on TV say the other night his mother always told him when he was a kid....If it ain't broke, then it ain't ours. We can live by that too. |
