Where is all the oil coming from
I have a 2072 runs and cuts great but has a pretty good oil leak. i can't figure where it is. I pressure washed everything and did not see anything up front I thought front seal. After washing I noticed oil on shrouds and top of motor under the carb. Ill post some pics. When I pulled back shroud over the heads I found a mess. Where do I need to look? One night this week I will try and get my son to pressure wash the back. I need to disconnect the oil lines to get the shroud off. Hard for me right now but I am determined.

I would bet it's coming from the crank seal. It's an easy job once the engine is removed.

Looks about like my 1912 I haven't pulled the engine out of yet. Everything is definitely well lubed.

Yep the seal behind the flywheel is done. She's A No Seal No Mo.

You need to pull the engine out and then remove the blower housing and the flywheel, once the flywheel is off you can use a pick and a hammer to put a hole in the seal, you might be able to use the pick to pull the seal out, if not you can thread a screw into the hole and used vise grips to pull it. Installing the new seal will be covered in the service manual.

Tim not sure I'm up to that right now. If you were closer I'd drop it off and let you pick it out. I might just have to get a case of oil and wait till winter.

I'm not sure i would go that route. That looks like a pretty good sized leak and I'd be concerned that the oil is being blown onto the hot muffler, I'd hate to see your tractor burn to the ground over it. Could you switch the deck to another tractor for now so you can take your time repairing it?

Do yourself a favor and don't run it slobbering oil over everything and clogging the fins with debris,causing overheating.
Or worse, it blows the seal out, while mowing and it throws a rod through the block, because it is out of oil. Your call. Luck what ever path you choose. |

You're going to have to fix it (or have it fixed) before you continue using it. My 1861 lost that seal last summer, and nearly ran the engine dry in about 2 minutes. It was a heck of a mess.
If you have a cherry picker, might be something your son can handle (with your guidance). It isn't a bad job.
