1864 rear seal replacement
Rear seal on my 1864 is starting to leak pretty bad and I'm kicking around the idea of pulling the motor and fixing it now even though my grass could probably already use a cutting, lol. I'm more of a quad guy than I am a tractor guy so don't really know what I'm getting into here.
I know a few of you have done these before so if you have any tips you'd like to share I'm all ears. Anything else I should do while I have the engine out? What about that foam gasket between the engine and the shroud, replace it? Any parts I should order besides the main seal? Appreciate any words of wisdom you care to impart and if anyone knows of a thread where someone detailed this procedure please post a link. Was looking at a few pictures from some threads I found on a search and some of those engines just look nasty, making me really think I should pull it and at least clean it all up when I replace that seal. |

Wrong time of year to pull n rebuild engine on grass cutter unless you have multiple rigs. Rear axle seal is easy. Might as well do case drain mod while in there. Sam has link to thread.

Not planning to get into the rear-end at this time, just the rear crank seal on the engine. Seems to be whats leaking then the blower throwing oil everywhere, at least that's my best guess. Doesn't seem like it should take too long from the reading I've done so far but always looking for advice on anything I may have overlooked. Want to order the parts today and get into this week, hopefully be able to mow next weekend. This is my only tractor and it pulls snow duty during the winter as well so this is probably my best shot.

it's pretty easy job, I've had the engines out of both mine for seal replacements.
if you have all the seals it can be done in one afternoon, including a decent clean to everything

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well, already went through the manual Sam sent me when I first bought the tractor, doesn't look like there is much to it just wanted to make sure there isn't something else I should be replacing while I have it out. Probably going to just get the seal, foam ring and fuel line unless someone comes up with something else. Might even yank the engine today and start getting everything cleaned up so when the parts get here I will be ready to go.

check the intake manifold bolts, one or two on both my engines were loose.
the intake gaskets are cheap you might just want to replace them while your there, engine has to come out to change them too.

Engine is out, build up isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Top of engine is actually more wet than crank area. Maybe an issue with the breather? Not certain the hose was even attached, pulled right off when i removed the air cleaner bracket.

What a difference a can of gunk and a pressure washer can make, lol. About ready to go once I get my parts, anyone any faster than partstree?

yes the breather can leak pretty bad.
I get all my gaskets from my local Simplicity dealer. they're usually the same prices as on line. this is what my 2084 engine looked like when I got it. it was leaking from both the breather and the crank seal. it had 1285 hours on it and I don't think that any part of the tractor had ever been washed.

If you have to purchase online i would buy from cubcadetpartsandmore. I believe there out of iowa and have the best prices ive come across. Not sure on fastest depends on location i suppose . i did order once from a greatoutdoor powersports and lawn out of kentucky and wasnt to long to get to minnesota, maybe 3 to 4 days.
