Default 149 Issues

Hi All,
I have a 149 that was repowered with a used 12 hp k301. So today I was using the tractor to plow my driveway. First time it was fine. Second time it was kind of sluggish. I also noticed sparks coming from the flywheel area. Shortly after it started smoking a little bit and died. Now the engine won't turn over even by hand. The oil in the crank case is 10W-30 that has less than 10 hours on it. The oil level was full before and after this incident. I'm kinda stumped any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, sparks are bad--that's one of our mottos at work. So, I would say something has gotten into the flywheel and locked up your engine (creating sparks while rubbing against the flywheel). Or your engine slowly locked up internally and got so hot that the sparks you saw prior to shut down was debris burning away and the flywheel blowing it around. Guess it is also possible something got into the driveshaft or the PTO clutch. Check to see if the driveshaft and PTO clutch are OK, see if you can turn the engine by hand.

Well it's either the engine or the driveline.

It's more than likely major mechanical issues with the engine. Could be a seized bearing. You're probably going to end up having to pull it and pull it apart.

Just to be sure we're on the same page.... when you say flywheel end, you do mean the actual flywheel end, and not the front where the PTO is right?

Just as a note, if you see sparks flying off a running motor, it would be a good idea to stop and try to see from where they are coming.

Maybe flywheel was not installed properly and came loose on crankshaft and now wedged against tin shrouding ?

Whoa bud. No need to go that fast. May be something simple. Doesn’t take much drag to overpower the starter, or a hand on the belt. A locked up bearing on the starter would do that. Let's take one step at a time...

No I'm talking up front where the pto is. Sorry for the confusion my mechanical knowledge is limited

Glad I asked then....

Do you have the PTO in the "OFF" position? If so, turn it on and try to start it. Some of the later 1X8/9 series had a safety switch on the PTO lever, so it may not let you do that. If you turn on the PTO and it doesn't even attempt to start, then you have that switch. If it does have the switch, then it gets more difficult.... If it does start with the PTO on, then it's likely your PTO clutch has failed. *IF* whoever did the engine swap did it right, it should still have a PTO with a brake on it, so it's possible that the brake is holding the engine from turning.

I'm thinking the PTO failed, or the basket pulley has moved on the shaft. Either one is going to require some mechanical ability. Would you like to proceed with diagnosing? Your going to have to go out and work on the tractor, and it's likely going to be a bit difficult if the PTO is bad. Do you have somewhere to work on it? I don't want to spend a bunch of time typing unless you plan to try and fix it. Not being mean, just matter of fact.

No I completely understand. It's not that I don't have any mechanical inclination it's just all self taught and I learn as I go. But anyways, to answer your question yes I'd like to go on diagnosing this. I can work on the tractor in my garage. It's supposed to be in the single digits the next few days but it is what it is. Also as a note I took the rod that engauges the pto off when I took the deck off if that makes any difference as to what you suggested.
