Did drive it and it seemed ok in the gears, will probably need motor mounts that were mentioned somewhere it does shake at low rpms, but overall I'm happy. I can start fixing the issues now that it runs.

Thanks much for your help

Woohoo!!

There's a little metal flap under the middle of the tractor on the brake shaft thing that pushes a switch when you push the pedal all the way down. Sounds like it needs adjusted or cleaned (a lot of people bypass that one, especially on hydros).

Yep found that one. Pretty grimy down there, next step will be cleaning and going through everything to see what is needed.

Glad you got it running. More glad you lucked out with a correct coil.

High idle engine speed is controlled by the governor, not the carb. Carb adjustments set low idle only. Download the K series manual for governor and carb settings/adjudtments.

Hydro tractors don't have "gears".

Good to hear you got it going.

On a side note I have noticed that you may have exceeded your words to picture ratio in this thread...

Good to know, I do plan on downloading the manual and working through all that.

I wondered if someone would say something about the gears...

Started tear down and cleanup today, overall every thing looks to be in ok shape. The fan on the shaft has a broken blade, a few scrapes and alot of dirt but I haven't seen anything that bad yet. Haven't seen any major leaks, possibly some minor ones.

Will work on cleaning some more the the next few days then probably fluid changes etc. Thinking about rewiring the whole thing a few old connections etc

A couple questions that I have. Are the directions for hooking up and operating the attachments in those manuals or should I look somewhere else?

Also as far as the rear pulleys/pto is it continually running or is it there a switch for it? I haven't been able to find information on the setup I have.

Edit: Also is there any benefit from tearing down further? Would it be worth it to pull the motor and replace the mounts?

Yes. Some of the instructions are in the tractor operators manual. Most are in the Operators manual for the attachment.

That is a tiller drive gear box. A long belt goes from the front PTO to the lower pulley on the gear box. It runs off the front PTO. Switch is on the dash. When the belt isn't on it, it's just a "pretty" to look at.

Yes. To both. Lots of worn part you haven't even begun to get to. Only thing I see you did was take the hoods and fenders off of it. Not much you can fix until you take it down further.

I was going to do just the basics on this 1650. Plans were for cradle mod, new drive line components, engine mounts, some gaskets and the trunnion repair. After pressure washing it I found some cracks in the frame. Sooooo, since I had to take it down to the frame, I figured i might as well go for a full restoration. This project is still in process. Take it down, find and correct the issues of a 40 yr old tractor and you will have a great machine with many more years of service.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
