Default Help with deck speeds

Does anyone know if there is another center deck pully for the later model 44" mowing decks? I have a 108 with a 44" deck, and the blade speed seems slow compared to other deck mowers. It is very quiet running, but in normal grass it only seems to throw the cut grass about a foot from deck opening. I have an old MTD, WITH CAST IRON REAR END, AND A GEAR DRIVEN DECK, and it throws the grass six feet out the end of the deck, and the blades are whirrring when engaged. I love this old 108, just looking to improve on the cutting operation. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes they do make a smaller speed up pulley, before you go that route are you sure that the engine is running up to speed?

Here is some information that I have on pulleys. It's been a long time since I messed with them and I do not remember where I got this information. Check before you buy something.

Small drive pulley (44" and 50" decks) is as follows

IH 126393-C1 44A decks with serial number 81742 and above. (Small pulley)

all other decks (44, 50, 50A) list IH 59703-C3(some list C-2 as well) as correct. Including a note about 44" decks below serial # 81741. (large pulley)

NOTE: These numbers are only good for YELLOW tractors. The 5/8" belt on the 82 series requires a different pulley.

Smile Deck speeds

Thanks for your info. I'll have to figure out which pully I have, and go from there. Motor is pulling full RPM . Could clutch size be different? I HAVE A CLUTCH OFF OF A 107, that seems smaller than the stock 108. Thanks for the help.

All the mechanical PTO clutches are the same diameter.

If you indeed have the smaller deck pulley, check to see if the belts and/or PTO clutch are slipping, run for a few seconds on an otherwise cool tractor in tall grass, shut off and immediately note the temperatures. Don't burn your hands!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
