You’re experiencing a big volt drop under load as the solenoid coil is a load. You need to figure out if drop is occurring upstream or downstream from key switch. Look at print that iron man posted a while back, batt positive starts at battery to start solenoid large post then control wire goes from that lug to amp gauge then to key switch. I’m thinking you still have a poor connection that you have not addressed yet. Hold in start position and start testing at solenoid coil and work your way back to battery.

Thanks Alvy.

So I started at the source, and tested straight off the battery + lug on the solenoid. Turn to start and it dropped immediately. Tried again, and it clicked. Tried a few more times, kept clicking. So I connected the battery to the starter (it was disconnected for diagnosis) and tried, nothing. Checked voltage it was dropping again. Disconnected the starter to see if that was the issue, still nothing.

Then it started doing it with the key on run and start. Shut the key off and right back up to 12v. Turned it a few times and went back to acting up on ignition. A few more clicks, back to low voltage on run or start, spikes back up when key is off.

Tested straight off the battery just for giggles and consistent 12+v regardless of key position (which makes sense). So the draw occurs between the battery cable and the solenoid if I'm thinking correctly. Or perhaps the switch is bad, as it only happens when turning it. I found it odd it was causing an issue with it on run and start.

Perhaps this gremlin is what was burning my coils too?

Traced a few more things today and think it may be the starter.

Each time the solenoid will start clicking after turn it enough times and trying to test different spots. Every time it starts working again, it will work perfect until I reconnect the starter. Then it engages once and sounds like it doesn't disengage.

Disconnecting the starter doesn't immediately disengage it, but jumping the solenoid a few times will eventually disengage it and then it goes back to working fine until I reconnect the starter.

I unplugged everything, including the switch and jumped it straight from the battery lug on the solenoid to the solenoid. With everything disconnected I was able to duplicate the issue.

I'm guessing something is shorted in the starter?

I'll swap the one from my 1200 this weekend and see if that changes anything.

If it IS the starter, what's everyone's thoughts on the $65 ebay ones?

Jumped the started straight from battery and it worked fine. As a last straw I put a new end on the positive cable at the battery. The one on there looked ok, but had some corrosion on it that I thought I had cleaned up. Apparently not well enough.

Problem solved.

Ran it for a good 10-15 mins, dialed in the rpms and drover er around in a few circles.

Hopefully the rain holds out, and my PTO works good. It's tilling time come Saturday

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
